Social Security Information and Resources for Women

Social Security Calculations for Retirement:

1. Sign up for online estimates of your social security benefits at ssa.gov/myaccount. You must have this estimate in order to do social security planning.

2. There are also online calculators at ssa.gov/planners/benefitcalculators.htm. You can get individual help on the telephone 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), or in person at a local SSA office.

3. A good FREE Social Security planner is individual.troweprice.com/public/Retail/Retirement/Social-Security-Tool.

4. Additional calculators can be found at three private companies:
maximizemysocialsecurity.com, socialsecuritysolutions.com, and socialsecuritychoices.com. They offer individual computations for a fee, and their websites will give you a good idea of how they work. Social Security Solutions has trained experts to work with you.

5. If you are at least 66 years old, you can file for benefits but “suspend” the benefits until you are older and then your spouse can apply for spousal benefits (50 percent of your benefits) on your work record while still allowing both you and your spouse’s retirement benefits to grow at 8 percent per year until age 70. The SSA site that mentions this strategy is ssa.gov/retire2/suspend.htm. (See item #2, above).
